Andrea Beckman

Andrea Beckman (nee Soven) built a legal career that spanned prosecution, criminal defense, and public oversight of law enforcement. She earned her Bachelor's Degree from the University of Florida and her law degree (J.D.) from the University of Miami. As an attorney, she began in criminal prosecution in Miami-Dade County, Florida, before settling into criminal defense practice in Denver, Colorado, which she maintained from 1979 until 1992.

Andrea made her most enduring mark in Nevada. She was instrumental in helping to create the state's first police civilian oversight board - the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Citizen Review Board - in 2000, and she served as its Executive Director for twenty years. Colleagues remembered her as a passionate, no-nonsense figure in that role, working closely with the LVMPD on matters of accountability and internal affairs.

Beyond the law, Andrea enjoyed local arts and entertainment, supporting Las Vegas baseball, Miami Heat basketball, and live theater. She passed away on May 28, 2020, in Weston, Florida, following a valiant fight against cancer.
