Andrew "Andy" MacKenzie was born on his family's ranch in Yerington, Nevada, the fourth of five children of Albert "Burr" and Marion MacKenzie. He attended the University of Nevada, where he was a member and president of Alpha Tau Omega and served as Captain of the ROTC, before earning his law degree from Georgetown Law School in Washington, D.C. He then served two years in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of Captain while stationed in El Paso, Texas, and Homestead, Florida.
