Anthony M. Turano

Anthony M. Turano was a Reno, Nevada attorney and writer whose career bridged the practice of law and American letters. Born on October 31, 1893 in the Province of Cosenza, in the Calabria region of Italy, he emigrated to the United States and built his professional life in Reno, where he practiced law and, as recorded in the 1940 census, made his home with his wife, Margaret, and their two daughters.

Beyond his legal practice, Turano earned a national literary reputation as an essayist. Through the 1930s he was a frequent contributor to The American Mercury, the influential magazine founded and edited by H. L. Mencken, with his articles appearing across the decade. Drawing on his experience at the Nevada bar, he also authored 'A Reno Lawyer Looks at Marriage and Divorce,' published in 1929 as Little Blue Book No. 1461.

Turano died on June 30, 1991 in Napa, California, at the age of 97. He is remembered as a member of the Nevada bar whose distinctive voice carried a lawyer's perspective onto the pages of American periodical literature.
