Bruce Knowlton Collmar was born July 30, 1947, in Logan, Utah, and was raised in Brigham City, where he graduated from Box Elder High School. He served in the Air Force from 1967 to 1970 and graduated second in his class from Officer Training School. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Colorado State University in 1970, followed by a Master of Business Administration in 1975 and a law degree in 1978, both from the University of Utah. Before entering the law, he worked as a stockbroker and a real estate agent in Salt Lake City.
Admitted to the State Bar of Nevada on December 31, 1978, Bruce began his legal career as a commercial attorney with the Las Vegas firm of Jones, Jones, Bell, Close & Brown. He later became a partner in the firm of Willford, Collmar & Wood in Dallas, Texas, from 1983 to 1990, where he specialized in banking and commercial law. In 1996 he returned to Salt Lake City, joining First Security Bank as a corporate attorney.
Beyond his legal practice, Bruce devoted himself to humanitarian causes. He volunteered with Amnesty International, serving as the organization's Western regional death-penalty abolition coordinator, and worked as an English tutor for immigrant children. He passed away on June 25, 1997, at the age of 49.
