In Memoriam
Cassandra G. Jones
Cassandra G. Jones built her legal career in Nevada's Carson Valley after graduating from Arizona State University summa cum laude and earning her law degree from the ASU College of Law, finishing in the top 10 percent of her class in just two and a half years. Admitted to the Nevada bar in 2003, she began as a litigation attorney with the Minden firm of Brooke & Shaw, handling criminal, family, and civil matters. She went on to serve as staff attorney to Douglas County District Judge Michael Gibbons, where she helped establish the Special Advocates for the Elderly program and became known for her legal research.
In 2011 she founded the Heritage Law Group, where her private practice spanned civil litigation, elder law, guardianships, and probate, and included advocating for children in domestic violence cases and termination of parental rights matters. She also served as an arbitrator, mediator, and justice of the peace pro tem, and volunteered as a pro bono attorney with Nevada Legal Services and Volunteers Attorneys for Rural Nevada. Elected in 2018 and taking office in 2019, she became the first woman to serve as a judge in Douglas County, presiding over the East Fork Justice Court.
Beyond the bench, Jones gave extensively to her community, serving on and chairing the Gardnerville Town Board and sitting on the boards of Austin's House and the Community Foundation of Douglas County. Her work was recognized with numerous honors, including the Business Council for Douglas County's Spotlight Award and repeated Pro Bono Service Awards. Halfway through her first term as justice of the peace, she died of cancer on July 12, 2022, remembered for nearly two decades of dedicated public service and for her advocacy on behalf of the community's most vulnerable members.
