Chauncey G. Griswold

Chauncey (Chan) Griswold was born in Elko, Nevada, on October 3, 1936, and spent his early years on the family ranch near Lamoille. After graduating from Elko High School in 1954, he attended Stanford University, earning a B.A. in Social Sciences in 1958, and went on to Stanford Law School, graduating in 1961, where he served on the Board of Editors of the Stanford Law Review.

Mr. Griswold enjoyed a long career practicing law in both the public and private sectors. Following law school he worked for the firm of Carlsmith, Carlsmith, Wichman, and Case in Hilo, Hawaii. In 1963 he moved to Reno, working first for the Legislative Council Bureau and then entering private practice with William Thornton and James Guinan as Thornton, Guinan, and Griswold. In 1971 he left private practice to become Chief Civil Deputy heading the District Attorney's Civil Division under newly-elected Washoe County District Attorney Robert Rose, continuing in that office under District Attorneys Larry Hicks and Calvin Dunlap.

Mr. Griswold later opened his own law office, representing private clients and the Incline Village General Improvement District, and subsequently served as a Deputy Attorney General for the State of Nevada and in the Reno City Attorney's Office, retiring in 1997. An active member of the Nevada State Bar, he served on its Board of Governors from 1974 to 1977 and on numerous committees, and was a founding member of the Stanford Law Society of Nevada. He remained deeply engaged in the civic and political life of Northern Nevada throughout his career.
