David E. Humke - 1948 to 2022-05-05

David E. Humke was a longtime attorney, jurist, and public servant in northern Nevada. Born in 1948 in Waterloo, Iowa, he built a career in law and public life centered in the Reno and Washoe County community, where he became widely known for his advocacy on behalf of children's services. He served as the first executive director of the Children's Cabinet in Reno, and county officials remembered him as an ardent advocate for children throughout his career.

Mr. Humke served in the Nevada Assembly, representing District 26, from 1983 to 2001, a tenure that spanned ten regular sessions and two special sessions. During those years he held a number of leadership roles, including membership on the Interim Finance Committee, service as Assistant Minority Floor Leader, and Co-Chairman of the Assembly Committee on Judiciary in 1995. He later served as a Washoe County Commissioner for District 2 from 2003 to 2014, including a term as chairman.

After his years on the county commission, Mr. Humke was elected to the bench as a family court judge, serving from 2014. He died at his home on May 5, 2022, at the age of 73. Colleagues recalled that he left an indelible mark on the community and would be missed by many.
