David G. Pumphrey

David Pumphrey was a Nevada attorney and public servant whose life and work were rooted in the Carson Valley and Reno areas. He arrived in Carson Valley in 1970 and worked for Bently Nevada for 12 years in sales, management and product development before entering McGeorge Law School in Sacramento under a special program, receiving his law degree in 1983.

After entering the legal profession, Pumphrey practiced law in the region and maintained his own law practice until he closed it in 1990. In 1988 he successfully challenged incumbent county commissioner Jerry Bing, beginning what would become years of elected service to his community.

Pumphrey served on the Douglas County Commission from 1989 to 1996, winning a second term in 1992 and serving as commission chairman. He was chairman when work on the 1996 master plan was completed and was one of the commissioners who signed the document upon its approval. Colleagues remembered him as a dedicated public servant who worked diligently for the citizens of Douglas County - a man of high energy and intelligence who gave his full effort to everything he took on. An avid bicyclist and skier, he died in 2006 at the age of 64 from injuries sustained in a bicycle accident.
