Zane Stanley Miles - 1935-01-30 to 1999-10-02

Zane Stanley Miles was a longtime northern Nevada lawyer whose career spanned journalism and public legal service. He first came to Nevada from Oklahoma in 1954 to serve as a survival instructor for the U.S. Air Force at Stead Air Force Base, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. Before entering the law, he built a substantial career in newspapers, working for publications across California, Nevada, Colorado, and Washington from 1958 to 1970, and serving as editor of the Tahoe Daily Tribune, the Nevada Appeal, and the Ely Daily Times.

Mr. Miles received his law degree from the University of the Pacific's McGeorge School of Law in 1977. From 1971 to 1978 he practiced as an associate attorney with Evans and Bilyeu in Elko, and in 1979 he became Elko County's first public defender.

Over the following years he devoted himself to public prosecution across rural Nevada. He served as deputy district attorney of Lyon County from 1987 to 1989, as deputy district attorney of Eureka County in 1990, and as district attorney of Lander County from 1991 to 1994. He passed away at the age of 64.
