George Holbrook Hawes III was a Nevada attorney whose legal career included service in the highest offices of the state's bar. Born August 26, 1932, in Morristown, New Jersey, to George Holbrook Hawes II and Helen Cook Hopping Hawes, he first came to Nevada with his father in 1942 and lived for a time in Carson City, remaining a frequent visitor to the state throughout his life.
Mr. Hawes received degrees in forestry and law from the University of Maine, and following post-graduate work at Georgetown University he was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court. In Nevada he served as a Deputy Attorney General of the State of Nevada and as District Attorney for Eureka County, contributing his legal expertise to the public service of the state.
Beyond the practice of law, Mr. Hawes led a life of remarkable breadth, working over the years as a forester, surveyor, writer, photographer, and musician, among many other pursuits. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, rising to the rank of sergeant and earning recognition as Soldier of the Month. A devoted family man, he was also a meticulous genealogical researcher of his family's history. He died September 20, 2000, in Las Vegas.
