George Rudiak

George Rudiak was a longtime Las Vegas attorney whose legal career in Nevada spanned roughly half a century. He earned his law degree from the University of California at Berkeley and passed the Nevada bar, and it was wartime military service that first brought him to Southern Nevada - he was assigned to the Las Vegas Gunnery School, later Nellis Air Force Base. At the end of his tour of duty in 1946, he and his wife decided to make Las Vegas their permanent home, where he built his practice and became a fixture of the local legal community.

Beyond the courtroom, Rudiak became one of the early voices for civil rights in Nevada. As a Democratic assemblyman from Las Vegas, he introduced a civil rights bill at the 1953 legislature that would have outlawed ordinances restricting the rights of Black residents. Though the measure failed, it stands as one of the first civil rights bills in Nevada history, advanced more than a decade before the federal Civil Rights Act of 1964. He continued that commitment through later public service, including a role as a civil rights commissioner.

Born March 27, 1915, George Rudiak died April 8, 1995, at the age of 80. He was married to Gertrude Rudiak, and the couple raised five children.
