Howard Mark Miller - 1944-01-06 to 2012-02-09
Howard Miller was a Las Vegas native and a well-known attorney in the city. Born January 6, 1944, in Detroit to Lillian and Maurice Miller, he moved with his family to Las Vegas in 1951 and grew up in the downtown area, attending Las Vegas High School. He went on to attend the University of Southern California for both his undergraduate and law degrees, completing law school in 1971.
Miller began his legal career in the public defender's office in Los Angeles. Encouraged by attorney and future Las Vegas mayor Oscar Goodman to practice in Nevada, he moved to Las Vegas in 1973 and joined Goodman's law firm, where he was regarded as a gifted and well-liked lawyer. After the firm dissolved, he spent a year with the district attorney's office before opening his own practice with Paul Carelli. Over the course of his career he also served as a partner in the gaming company Tech Art.
Miller was a trusted counselor to many, including former Las Vegas mayor Jan Jones, for whom he provided legal counsel during her time in office. Colleagues remembered him as thoughtful, pragmatic, and genuinely funny - someone whose honesty made him a valued advisor. An avid outdoorsman, he remained active in retirement through biking, skiing, and hiking. He died on February 9, 2012, at the age of 68.
