Ioannis A. Lougaris

Ioannis A. Lougaris was born in Zakynthos, Greece, on December 17, 1887, and immigrated to the United States in 1907 at the age of nineteen. He settled first in New York, then Chicago and San Francisco, became an American citizen in 1915, and served in the U.S. Army during World War I. In 1920 he came to Nevada, where he operated a banana stand while studying for the state bar exam. Admitted to the Nevada bar on December 31, 1927, he went on to build a long career as a practicing attorney, residing over the years in both Carson City and Reno.

Beyond his law practice, Lougaris devoted himself to securing the funding and legislation needed to build Reno's first veterans hospital. As a National Committeeman of the American Legion, he made numerous trips to Washington, D.C. - sixteen of them at his own expense - to press senators and members of Congress to approve the project. He personally broke ground for the facility, which opened in 1939, and in 1981 the hospital was named in his honor as the Ioannis A. Lougaris Veterans' Administration Medical Center.

In 1987, the final year of his life, Lougaris received the Distinguished Nevadan award in recognition of his decades of service to the state and its veterans. He died on December 28, 1987, at the age of 100, at the medical center that bears his name. His legacy endures in that institution, which continues to serve Nevada's veterans to this day.
