Jack Conrad Cherry - 1932-07-08 to 2015-08-07
Jack Conrad Cherry was born on July 8, 1932, in Goldfield, Nevada, and was raised in Las Vegas, graduating from Las Vegas High School in 1950. He earned a Bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1954, and following service as a company commander with the 78th Tank Company in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956, he attended the University of Southern California Law School, receiving his law degree in 1959. He was admitted to the Nevada bar on October 27, 1959.
Mr. Cherry began his legal career as a Deputy District Attorney for Clark County, and in 1960 was appointed District Attorney, serving in that role for approximately two years. While in the District Attorney's office he served as legal counsel and advisor to an impaneled Grand Jury, obtained convictions in 22 criminal misdemeanor cases, and secured convictions in 8 felony jury trials. He went on to spend 22 years in private practice with the firm of Beckley, Singleton, DeLanoy, Jemison & Reid, and later served as Of Counsel to Alverson, Taylor, Mortensen & Sanders from 1995 to 2015.
A respected trial lawyer, Mr. Cherry was a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) and tried 35 civil jury trials to verdict over the course of his career. Among his most notable matters, he represented Kenneth Bergstedt, a young quadriplegic, in the first Right to Die case in the State of Nevada, in which the Nevada Supreme Court affirmed a declaratory judgment permitting Bergstedt the right, under specific guidelines, to terminate his sustaining medical treatment. Jack Conrad Cherry died on August 7, 2015, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
