Roy Allen Woofter

Roy Allen Woofter was a longtime Southern Nevada attorney and jurist whose career in law and public service spanned some 50 years. Born in Sheridan, Wyoming, in 1933, he graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno, and earned his law degree from the Georgetown University School of Law, where he clerked during the administrations of Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson.

Over the course of his legal career, Woofter served as a Las Vegas Justice Court judge and as city attorney for both Las Vegas and North Las Vegas. He helped establish the Clark County public defender's office and served as Clark County District Attorney from 1975 to 1982. He also served as a Las Vegas city councilman.

Beyond the bench and the bar, Woofter was widely regarded as a founding figure of modern Las Vegas. He served as a board member and vice chairman of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority for seven years, helped launch the UNLV football program, was a founding member of the Las Vegas Bowl, and was instrumental in bringing minor league baseball to the city. Colleagues remembered him as a man whose word was his bond. He died on January 25, 2013, at the age of 79.
