Jeanne Smith Stewart - November 20, 1922 to June 20, 2007

Jeanne Smith Stewart was among the early women admitted to the practice of law in Nevada, joining the State Bar of Nevada on December 31, 1949 as attorney number 2094. Born on November 20, 1922 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, she entered the profession at a time when few women had done so in the state.

In 1950 she went into private law practice in Las Vegas alongside her then-husband, J. Kell Houssels Jr., who had served as an assistant district attorney beginning in 1948. Together they were part of the small legal community of a young and rapidly growing Las Vegas.

Jeanne Smith Stewart passed away on June 20, 2007 in Los Angeles, California. She was survived by her son, Kell Houssels III, and her daughter-in-law, Jennifer.
