In Memoriam
John Whitting Bogy
John Whitting Bogy was a noted regulatory attorney who served as General Counsel of Nevada Bell. Born and raised in Toluca Lake, California, he graduated from North Hollywood High School and earned his B.A. with honors from Harvard University, where he served as Editor of the Harvard Political Review. He went on to receive a Master of Literature degree from Oxford University in England and his law degree from Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley.
John began his legal career working to protect California's coastline with the California Coastal Conservancy before becoming a respected regulatory lawyer and General Counsel of Nevada Bell. Throughout his career he brought a rigorous intellect and deep sense of public purpose to his work.
Beyond the law, John was a passionate and committed conservationist - an accomplished climber, mountaineer, and naturalist who explored much of the California wilderness, and particularly the Sierra Nevada. A respected expert on the native plant species of the Sierra, he was a fervent believer that in the preservation of the wilderness lay the preservation of the world. He passed away unexpectedly on October 3, 2007, at the age of forty-eight.
