Mark A. Hinueber

Mark A. Hinueber was a Nevada attorney and a leading champion of the First Amendment, best known for his decades of service as legal counsel to the Las Vegas Review-Journal and other newspapers. Born May 22, 1952, in Litchfield, Illinois, he graduated from Blackburn College in Carlinville, Illinois, in 1973 with a bachelor's degree in political science and went on to earn his law degree from The John Marshall Law School in Chicago.

Hinueber began his newspaper legal career in 1978, founding the in-house legal department for Scripps League Newspapers Inc. in San Mateo, California, where he worked for 17 years. In 1994 he joined Donrey Media Group as in-house counsel, and he relocated to Las Vegas in 1999 when the company moved its headquarters there. Through a series of ownership changes he rose to become the Review-Journal's vice president, general counsel and human resources director, a role he held until his retirement in January 2016, after which he continued to serve as a consultant.

Throughout his career Hinueber fought for the public's right to know, defending journalists and photographers, challenging gag orders and closed-door proceedings, and advocating for open records and open meetings. He prevailed in a 2000 Nevada Supreme Court case establishing that records of taxpayer-funded cellphones were public. He served for more than a decade on the editorial board of Nevada Lawyer, was a graduate of Leadership Las Vegas (2005) and a member of its council, and gave years of service on the board of trustees of Blackburn College. Admitted to the State Bar of Nevada on September 29, 2000, he was remembered by colleagues for championing journalism, media transparency, and the public interest. He died August 23, 2018, at age 66.
