Norman Ty Hilbrecht was born on February 11, 1933, in San Diego, California, and moved to Nevada as a young boy, graduating from Las Vegas High School in 1952. He continued his education at Northwestern University, graduating Cum Laude in 1956 with a Bachelor of Arts, and earned his law degree from Yale University in 1959. He served his country as a Judge Advocate General (JAG) Captain in the U.S. Army. Admitted to the Nevada Bar in 1959, he went on to practice law in Nevada for more than 50 years.
A civic-minded Nevadan, Hilbrecht served the people of his state with distinction in public office as a Nevada State Assemblyman from 1966 to 1973 - including as Minority Leader in 1971-1972 - and as a Nevada State Senator from 1974 to 1978. In private practice, he founded and partnered at the Hilbrecht & Jones law firm from 1962 to 1969, which expanded into Hilbrecht, Jones, Schreck & Bernhard from 1969 to 1983, where he served as President of the firm. In 1983, he founded Norman Ty Hilbrecht & Associates, a firm emphasizing administrative law, business and agency practice, estate planning protection, and appellate advocacy. His firm received recognition in the Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers and Best Lawyers in America publications.
Hilbrecht contributed broadly to the legal community and to public service in Nevada and Clark County. He served as President of the Clark County Legal Aid Association in 1964, with the Nevada Legal Aid Defender Association from 1965 to 1983, as Vice President of the Nevada Trial Lawyers in 1966, as Chairman for Administrative Law of the State Bar of Nevada from 1991 to 1994 and again in 1996, and as President of the Nevada Arbitration Association from 1984 to 1985. In 1997 he served as an Ombudsman for the Western Regional Assembly and as a Nevada Supreme Court Settlement Judge. He was also a lecturer at the UNLV William S. Boyd School of Law and provided counsel to numerous companies over his career. Norman Ty Hilbrecht passed away on November 19, 2019, at the age of 86.
