Richard C. Mallery

Richard C. "Dick" Mallery, a distinguished real estate and business attorney whose career spanned nearly six decades, died on May 6, 2026, at the age of 88. Born in Ohio in 1937, he earned a B.A. from DePauw University in 1959, an M.A. from Cornell University in 1960, and his J.D. from Stanford Law School in 1963. He began practicing law in 1964 and joined Snell & Wilmer, where he remained for 58 years until his retirement on December 31, 2022.

At Snell & Wilmer, Mr. Mallery concentrated on business, real estate, and financial transactions, with a particular emphasis in his later years on medical and bioscience ventures. He led the firm's Real Estate Practice Group, served on its Executive Committee, and spent more than 30 years as managing partner, mentoring generations of the firm's attorneys. His work was recognized in The Best Lawyers in America for Real Estate Law and in Southwest Super Lawyers, and his leadership helped guide the firm to a preeminent position in Arizona and across the West.

Beyond his legal practice, Mr. Mallery was a driving force in bringing the International Genomics Consortium and the Translational Genomics Research Institute to Phoenix, serving as founding chair and CEO of the International Genomics Consortium. He was the founding president of the Herberger Theater Center and, in the early 1990s, organized a group of investors to help America West Airlines emerge from bankruptcy. A founding member of the Phoenix 40 - later Greater Phoenix Leadership - he was also involved with the Flinn Foundation, served as a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and sat on the advisory board of the National Foundation for Cancer Research in Bethesda.
