Richard Charles Maurer

Richard Charles Maurer was born May 8, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan. He attended Ferris State College in Michigan on a football scholarship, drawing on his height and athletic ability, and after graduation went on to earn his law degree at Detroit College of Law. He built his legal career in Southern Nevada, where he became a respected fixture of the Las Vegas legal community.

Maurer served as city attorney for the City of Las Vegas and later as city attorney for the City of North Las Vegas, working for that city from 1989 to 1999 - a decade during which colleagues credited him with consistently placing the city's interests first. He was a graduate of the FBI National Academy and served as special counsel to the Metropolitan, North Las Vegas, and Henderson police departments, and he had been vice president of Idlers, Inc.

Remembered by peers as an outstanding attorney and a credit to the legal profession, Maurer was known for his enthusiasm and his generosity of spirit. Defense attorney Thomas Pitaro, who had known him for more than twenty years, described him as one of the nicest men he had ever met. Away from the law, Maurer was an avid outdoorsman and athlete who loved hunting, fishing, camping, flying, and scuba diving. He died May 7, 2001, at the age of 56.
