Robert M. Thorniley

Colonel Robert M. Thorniley, U.S. Army (Retired), was a distinguished attorney whose legal career spanned decades of military and civilian service. Born March 10, 1925 in Topeka, Kansas, he first served as an enlisted soldier in the Army Corps of Engineers from 1943 to 1946 in the United States and Europe. He earned his law degree from George Washington University in 1949 and received a commission in the Judge Advocate General's Corps in 1950.

Over the course of his military legal career, Colonel Thorniley held assignments in Korea, Guam, Japan, and the Panama Canal Zone. He taught procurement law at the Judge Advocate General School at the University of Virginia, served as Staff Judge Advocate at White Sands Missile Range, and served on the U.S. Board of Contract Appeals in Washington, D.C. His service was recognized with the Legion of Merit and other military honors. He retired from military service in 1972.

Following his military retirement, Colonel Thorniley made his home in Las Vegas and was admitted to the State Bar of Nevada in 1974. He served for more than 15 years as chief legal counsel for EG&G in Las Vegas, bringing his extensive background in procurement and contract law to his work in the Nevada legal community until his second retirement. He passed away January 18, 2013, at the age of 87.
