Rodney E Sumpter

Rodney E. Sumpter was a Reno attorney who practiced law in Nevada for more than four decades. A native product of the region's schools, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science and government from the University of Nevada, Reno, and received his Juris Doctor from the University of the Pacific - McGeorge School of Law. He was admitted to the State Bar of Nevada in 1980 and built a sole practice concentrating in family law, bankruptcy, estate planning, and personal injury litigation, appearing in Nevada's state and federal courts.

Sumpter was widely recognized for his commitment to pro bono service, a devotion that earned him the affectionate title 'the King of Pro Bono' among colleagues. He was honored nine times as 'Attorney of the Year' for his volunteer work and received the Washoe County Sole Practitioner of the Year Pro Bono Award. Beginning in 2011 he volunteered with Nevada Legal Services, where he assisted more than 400 pro bono clients over the course of his service and was later honored with the organization's Legacy Award at its Champions of Justice event. He held a Martindale-Hubbell Preeminent rating and co-authored and lectured on 'Domestic Violence in Nevada' for the State Bar's Nevada Lawyer magazine.

Remembered by peers as an honorable and excellent lawyer and a trailblazer, Sumpter was known for approaching his practice with good humor, humility, and compassion. He was active in his community as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Center for Spiritual Living in Reno and a director of the Territorial Enterprise Foundation. He closed his law practice in 2025. Colleagues noted that his legacy would live on through every individual he helped and inspired.
