Sidney R. Whitmore - 1921-12-31 to 2003-02-01
Sidney Roxton Whitmore was born on December 31, 1921, in St. Thomas, Nevada, and graduated from Overton High School. During World War II he served in the United States Army as a stenographer. Following the war, he earned his law degree at George Washington University and passed the Nevada Bar Examination in 1951, joining the state's legal community as it entered a period of rapid growth.
Whitmore moved to Las Vegas to serve as deputy clerk at the newly opened U.S. Federal District Court. In 1960 the Las Vegas City Commission appointed him city attorney, a post to which he was later reelected. Over the course of his career he was also active in real estate, farming, and ranching, becoming a fixture of the community during his 52 years as a Las Vegas resident.
Sidney R. Whitmore died on February 1, 2003. His life and public service are documented in the Sidney R. Whitmore Collection held by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Special Collections, which preserves materials from his tenure as Las Vegas City Attorney and his broader professional activities.
