Thomas Arthur Cooke

Thomas Arthur "Tom" Cooke was a prominent and well-respected attorney in Reno, Nevada, and a member of one of the state's notable legal families. The son of Hermon Richard Cooke - himself a distinguished Nevada attorney who had earlier led the state bar - Tom completed his law degree in 1948 and began practicing law in Reno the following year, joining his father in the firm of Cooke & Cooke. After his father's era, he continued in practice for decades, forming a firm with Bruce D. Roberts and later adding David J. Reese to the partnership in 1966.

In 1970, his colleagues elected him president of the Nevada State Bar, a position his father had held more than 40 years earlier. Beyond his law practice, Tom devoted himself to public service, conservation, and historic preservation. He served with the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and chaired the Washoe County Park Commission, reflecting a lifelong commitment to Nevada's civic and natural heritage.

Tom was remembered for a reputation as a lawyer with a kind heart and Irish wit, and for an unwavering belief in the rule of law and personal liberties. The Nevada columnist Rollan Melton described him as "the magnificent Nevada champion of personal liberties." He had married Martha Patricia "Patty" Herz while a student at the University of Nevada in the early 1940s, and the couple remained together for more than 50 years until his death.
