Walter Russell Cannon - 1946-12-26 to 2024-07-01

Walter Russell Cannon - known to friends and colleagues as Walt or Wally - was a leading attorney in the State of Nevada for many years. Born on December 26, 1946, in St. Paul, Minnesota, he earned his B.A. from California State University in 1972 and his J.D. from the University of San Diego in 1975. He served in the U.S. Army as a Military Police officer from 1966 to 1968 before pursuing his legal education and career.

He began practicing law in Nevada in 1976 and went on to become a shareholder in the Las Vegas firm of Olson, Cannon & Gormley. Admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court of Nevada, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court, he built a distinguished trial practice over the decades that followed.

Mr. Cannon was a member of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America and the Nevada Trial Lawyers Association, served as a Master for Nevada's Inns of Court, and was certified as a civil trial advocate by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. His crowning professional recognition came with his admission as a Fellow of the exclusive American College of Trial Lawyers. He was also a devoted mentor to many young lawyers, remaining invested in their lives and generous with his counsel throughout his career. He passed away on July 1, 2024.
