William Jefferson Crowell Sr. - 1913 to July 1988
William Jefferson Crowell Sr. was a Nevada attorney for some 50 years. Born in 1913 in Tucson, Arizona, he moved to Hazen, Nevada, as a child and lived in the mining communities of Goldfield and Tonopah before settling in Carson City in the 1950s. He was admitted to the State Bar of Nevada on December 31, 1937.
Over a long career he served the public and the profession in several capacities. He was district attorney for Nye and Esmeralda counties from 1956 to 1958, and he served as legal counsel for the Nevada Industrial Commission from 1959 to 1978. In Carson City he practiced in the firm that grew into Crowell, Susich, Owen & Tackes, Ltd., a Carson City practice with roots dating to 1950, and he was later joined in private practice by his sons.
William Jefferson Crowell Sr. died in July 1988 in Carson City at the age of 75. He was survived by his wife, Harriet, and their sons William J. Crowell Jr. and Robert 'Bob' Crowell, both of Carson City, who each continued the family's legal tradition - Robert later serving as mayor of Carson City.
